Cayenne Chilli Seeds – 10 seeds to grow at home
Cayenne chilli seeds (10 pcs) are seeds of the chilli plant Cayenne (Capsicum annuum), which grows 80 – 110 cm tall and bears red fruits 10 – 15 cm long. The heat of the fruits is 50,000 SHU (Medium category, medium hot), and ripening takes 60 days on average.
A polytunnel or greenhouse is ideal for growing chillies from seed, but you can also raise Cayenne at home on a windowsill or in a pot on the balcony. We sow in mid-February and plant outside in May, once there is no more risk of night frosts.
Cayenne chilli pepper
Cayenne has long, slender red fruits with a clear, clean heat. The thin flesh dries easily, so from your harvest you can make your own dried chilli peppers, chilli flakes or ground chilli powder.
How to sow chilli seeds – germination and young plants
- Sowing: mid-February in seed compost, 2 – 3 seeds per cell (not every seed germinates)
- Germinating chilli seeds: the ideal temperature is 24 – 30 °C; keep the compost moist but not wet
- After germination: room temperature and plenty of light – in winter, LED lighting helps
- Repotting: move stronger seedlings into larger pots
- Planting out: in May after the last night frosts – into a polytunnel, greenhouse, garden bed or a pot on the balcony
Tip: to start your seedlings you can use our GROW BOX with LED lighting – a mini greenhouse for your table that includes everything you need, seeds included. If you do not want to wait, choose ready-grown chilli plants instead.
What is it good with?
Use the fruits fresh in stir-fries, eggs and pasta, or dry them and turn them into chilli flakes and chilli powder for pizza, curry and BBQ ribs.
Who is it for?
Suitable for beginners and slightly more advanced growers – the plant grows willingly and many fruits are ideal for drying. Chilli seeds also make a nice little gift for hobby gardeners and lovers of spicy food.
